Gladden Community House is a local Franklinton organization that has been serving Columbus for 110 years. When we wanted to choose a charity to provide support to during the holiday season in 2015, they were an obvious choice. By donating to their Youth Group Services fund, Mid-City has been able to help Gladden provide valuable after-school experiences to many children and teens in the area.
Tricia Koenig, Youth Group Services Worker for Gladden, sees the positive impacts the Group Services provide the grade school and middle school students of Franklinton throughout the program. Students in the program are with the same group participants all year, which allows them to build trust and lasting friendships, in addition to participating in fun activities like cooking, fitness, and drama classes. Some of the activities they have been taking part in this year include a trip to a trampoline park, bowling, the movies, and an Ohio State basketball game. But in addition to the outings, students also learn about important topics to help them lead healthy and productive lives. The Gladden team teaches them about anger management, self-esteem, conflict resolution, bullying, drugs and alcohol, community service, and healthy living. I think one of the best things though is that the Group Services program gives kids in this community a space to learn, experience new things, and be challenged and encouraged to grow socially, emotionally, and academically, Tricia said.
In the future, Tricia is planning more trips to the trampoline park, several basketball games, the zoo, a pumpkin patch, and even a climbing and ropes course. If you are interested in getting involved or helping to fund one of these field trips, visit the Gladden Community House website to learn more, and be sure to check out our photo album below that showcases the fun adventures the students have been on so far in 2016!
