The Fran Ryan Center

Columbus

2025

44,000 sqft

Scope of Work

The City of Columbus recently opened the Fran Ryan Community Center—an inspiring, 44,000-square-foot facility designed to serve residents of all ages. Though designed with resources for older adults in mind, the center welcomes the entire community to enjoy its fitness center and a wide range of specialized studios—including ceramics, glasswork, painting, sewing, woodworking, and more.

Mid-City Electric provided a comprehensive range of electrical installations for the project, delivering tailored solutions that powered every square foot of this diverse and multifunctional space. From four electrical rooms to each individual studio, our team worked with precision and intention to meet the building’s technical demands and support its vibrant programming.

The studios themselves required customized electrical support based on their specialized functions. From kilns in the glass and pottery studios to power tools in the woodworking shop and high-tech setups in the digital arts and machining studios, every space was equipped to handle its specific electrical load and performance requirements.

Lighting installation was another key element of the project. A signature fixture in the main entrance required approximately 40 manhours to lay out and install. Throughout the building—where open ceilings make up 90% of the design—our team used multiple three-plane lasers to ensure all lighting and conduit installations were perfectly aligned with the building’s structure, maintaining both precision and visual appeal.

Prefabrication played a vital role in supporting project efficiency. Mid-City’s prefab team produced over 750 branch and lighting circuit hangers and supplied all necessary materials, including more than 4,000 feet of 3/8" all-thread, 250 feet of 1/2" all-thread, 750 feet of 1 5/8" strut, and 700 feet of Z-Channel strut. They also delivered in-wall boxes, EMT conduit bends, phenolic labels, and various devices and sleeves—all prepped to streamline on-site installation.

Mid-City is proud to have powered this new community landmark, helping ensure that the Fran Ryan Community Center is built to serve and inspire Columbus residents for years to come.
